Austin Area Animal Shelters
|
| There are many misconceptions about shelters; they have bad animals, they don't have pure-bred animals, the animals are ugly, the animals are mean, - but that just isn't true! There are wonderful pets at every shelter including pure-bred dogs and cats, and gorgeous mixed breeds of every size, shape and age. Unfortunately, open-door shelters fill-up very quickly and millions of animals are euthanized every year because they just didn't have enough time to find a new home. So please, adopt from your local shelter and SAVE A LIFE today! |

Special Needs Rescue
Austin's Pet Directory will have this very special needs pet listed until he is adopted, however long that takes. He is a special boy and deserves a special home!
GRANT
Grant is a 16 months old Russian Great Dane. He has a spinal injury which requires an expensive LS surgery (Lumbosacral Stenosis ). Cost of surgery is $4,000. His owner could not afford the surgery, so he turned him into the shelter to be euthanized.
Luckily for Grant, the shelter rescue director contacted our rescue. Seeing Grant at the shelter was heartbreaking. He was very skinny, at least 40 Lb. underweight and he had hard time walking. But in spite of his bad shape and obvious pain, Grant walked very slowly and greeted us with a low howl, as if he was saying “Hellooow, can you pleeeese help me?”. That was all it took. Grant made it out of the shelter- alive.
Grant was taken to the specialty hospital where he had x-rays and a cat scan. It was determine that he has a spinal injury called Lumbosacral Stenosis. The surgeon also detected an infection in the lower spine, which she said was the worse she has ever seen. Grant was put on meds and is now waiting to have his surgery, but first he has to gain some weight and be treated for his spinal infection.
Since then, Grant has gained 20 Lb. His infection is being treated with combination of antibiotics. It seems to be making a difference. Grant is feeling much better and is no longer needing pain meds. But we still have a long way to go. Once Grant is ready, he will have surgery to hopefully fix the damaged caused to his spine.
