Get Educated Before you Buy!

It is important to become educated about where the kittens and puppies in pet stores come from before you make the decision to buy a pet. Most people think that pets sold in pet stores are guarenteed to be healthier, they are pure-breds, and that they are are free from behavioral problems. Unfortunately, pet stores purchase their puppies and kittens from massive breeding facilities (often refered to as "puppy mills"), or dealers that purchase these pets from breeding facilities or auctions. The animals at these facilities receive little if any veterinarian care, are kept in small crowded cages, are not socialized, and are bred several times a year until they can no longer produce. These animals are not treated as "pets", but rather, they are considered revenue producing commodities used for breeding and then discarded when they are no longer useful or become too sick to breed. In recent years, many pet stores have discontinued selling puppies and kittens because of the inhumane treatment these pets must endure, and have instead opened their doors to local rescue groups and shelters for pet adoption days.

Almost every shelter (depending on the time of year) has many puppies and kittens to choose from, so become part of the solution by adopting your next pet from your local shelter or rescue group! Please take a moment to educate yourself on the reality of where that "cute puppy in the window" really comes from - Here are some great resources to help you get started!
