Why is Petland Bad for Austin?
-
Over 12,000 homeless dogs and cats die at Town Lake Animal Shelter every year because they can't find homes
-
Petland purchases their pets from Puppy & Kitten Mill distributors (See below: What is a Puppy Mill?)
-
Petland will bring thousands of more unaltered pets into Austin creating even more unwanted pets
Why Single out Petland?
Petland purchases their pets from The Hunte Corporation located in Goodman, Mo, who purchases their animals from puppy mills. The Hunte Corporation is the largest puppy dealer in the U.S., selling 90,000 puppies every year to retail pet stores. Petland is the only store in our area selling puppies.
What is a Puppy Mill?
Puppy mills are large commercial breeding facilities where hundreds of dogs are packed into small cages and live in deplorable conditions. These dogs live in cages that are rarely or poorly cleaned, without fresh water, without proper shelter, and little if any veterinary care, and they are never let out of their cages. Many will die in their cages before they ever make the long journey to your local pet store.
At 6 to 8 weeks old, puppies are "harvested" and cleaned up for the trip to the broker. They are bathed to clean off the feces and urine they have been living in during their brief lives in the puppy mill. They are then packed into a container with many other puppies often without water or proper air circulation. Some will die on this long trip, and others will be rejected by the broker only to be sent back to live out their lives as "breeding stock". Many others will be killed for their lack of monetary value, and others are sold to research facilities. The survivors can be seen at your local pet store, often with a host of undetected health and behavior problems. Meanwhile the breeding parents of these puppies continue to live out their lives in their puppy mill cages until they can no longer produce puppies, and then they too are sold to research facilities or are killed. As long as people continue to purchase from stores like Petland - the puppy mill trade will continue.
Where Do Petland's Puppies Come From?
Petland obtains its puppies from the Hunte Corporation, the self-proclaimed largest puppy dealer in the nation. The Hunte Corporation is a wholesaler of puppies. While the Hunte Corporation's ads and website show a sparkling clean and modern facility for the puppies, what isn't shown is where the puppies come from before they arrive at Hunte - the same filthy puppy mills described above. No responsible breeder would ever sell their puppies to a puppy broker or pet store.
